Loreto

Loreto and Its Wonderful Marine Park

Loreto is a small historic town, primarily visited by American tourists due to the daily flights connecting the United States to the town’s small international airport.

Loreto is also a Pueblo Mágico, meaning it remains faithful to its ancient traditions and history, which can be seen in the many fascinating landmarks both within and outside the town.

The Historic Centre and the Mission Nuestra Señora de Loreto

Loreto was the first Spanish colonial settlement in Baja California, established in the late 17th century by Jesuit missionaries. Its historic centre is defined by the Mission Nuestra Señora de Loreto, founded in 1697 and still well-preserved. Inside, visitors can admire 18th-century statues and an altarpiece, as well as relics such as a small boat, period weapons, tools, and other intriguing artefacts in the adjacent museum.

The mission holds historical significance as the first mission established on the peninsula and as the starting point for Jesuit missionary work across the two Californias.

The entire town centre is characterised by typical colonial architecture, charming corners, and numerous artisan shops.

Loreto is also home to its oldest restaurant, where the owner and chef prepares traditional dishes using ancestral methods—without electric tools—and local ingredients, following recipes passed down through generations.

The Mission of San Javier

Not far from Loreto, about a 30-minute drive along a dirt road through lush vegetation and near a palm-filled oasis, lies the ancient and grand Mission of San Javier.

Mision San Jacier

Its impressive stone structure, still magnificently preserved, stands majestically on a large square surrounded by a few small eateries and scattered houses along dirt roads.

Next to the cathedral lies a small historic cemetery, and behind it, a massive olive tree estimated to be at least 300 years old—roughly the same age as the cathedral and the ancient garden once cultivated by the missionaries.

The Seafront and Isla Coronado

Loreto’s seafront is shaded by tall palm trees, lined with villas and resorts, and adorned with large statues dedicated to various marine species. The bay is watched over by a large white lighthouse, beneath which small boats are moored—not only those of local fishermen but also those that ferry visitors to Isla Coronado. This island, along with four other islets, is part of a protected National Marine Park.

Isla Coronado is a small paradise of crystal-clear turquoise waters and white sand, contrasting beautifully with the dark grey volcanic rocks. The island is crisscrossed by small trails leading to spectacular views of the bay.

Marine life around Isla Coronado is incredibly abundant, making it easy to spot large manta rays, dolphins, sea turtles, and a wide variety of colourful tropical fish of all sizes. Snorkelling here offers a chance to marvel at this natural beauty and biodiversity.

Tourism Development and Environmental Risks

Like other towns in Baja California, Loreto is part of the government’s ambitious tourism development plans, following the model of Acapulco and later Los Cabos. However, the local population and fishermen are well aware of the potential environmental impact such large-scale exploitation could have on this pristine area, and they appear resistant to unsustainable resource use.

Some locals recall how, as early as the 1960s, the waters of Loreto Bay were subjected to predatory fishing tourism, which nearly drove certain species, such as groupers, to extinction. Since then, groupers have never regained their former size or reproductive capacity, which seems directly linked to the size of the individuals.

Concerned about water resources—not just the sea but also freshwater, as Loreto is a desert town with limited supplies—the citizens are prepared to oppose any development plans that are not environmentally sustainable.

After all, it was this very community that advocated for the creation of the protected area and the implementation of laws to safeguard the region’s natural beauty and wealth.
