Cabo San Lucas

Cabo San Lucas: The Capital of Luxury in Baja California

Cabo San Lucas is the most well-known town in Baja California and the most luxurious seaside destination in Mexico.

Located at the southern tip of the peninsula, it forms, together with San José del Cabo (home to the international airport), the two Los Cabos. These are connected by a scenic 32-kilometre tourist corridor along the coast, lined with numerous upscale resorts.

Cabo San Lucas boasts expansive beaches and is set amidst a vast desert and mountainous region. However, it is primarily visited for its many tourist attractions, vibrant nightlife, and lively historic centre, which is packed with bars, restaurants, clubs, and discos.

There aren’t many historical landmarks to visit in Cabo San Lucas, except for the Mission Estero de las Palmas located in San José, which was founded by Jesuits around 1730.

The Arch of Cabo San Lucas

The beaches in Cabo San Lucas are well-equipped, and one of the most famous is the beach by El Arco (The Arch), a stunning rock formation located right at the tip of the peninsula.

The Arch: Finis Terrae

El Arco is also known as Finis Terrae (the end of the earth) because, heading south by sea, there is no land until Antarctica. It is the meeting point of the two seas that embrace the peninsula: the Sea of Cortez and the Pacific Ocean.

The Arch is accessible by boat, with a short trip that passes various natural points of interest, such as the sea lion colony, the Window to the Ocean (a natural opening in a rock wall rising from turquoise waters) where the two seas meet, Lover’s Beach with its pinkish sand and calm waters, and Divorce Beach, where the waves are too strong for safe swimming.

The boat also stops at calm spots with rich marine life, allowing snorkelling to admire the vibrant variety of colourful fish of all sizes.

The Beaches of Cabo San Lucas

While the strong currents and waves make some areas unsuitable for inexperienced swimmers, there are more sheltered beaches ideal for families. These are equipped for all kinds of sports activities, including unique experiences like camel rides along the shoreline.

The Climate

The climate in Cabo San Lucas is pleasant year-round. From late spring through summer, the water is warm and perfect for swimming. However, winter months are the best time to spot marine animals, such as whales, which draw many tourists to this destination.

Whales and Sharks

Los Cabos is a prime location for humpback whale sightings, as these majestic creatures come to these waters to breed from late December to March each year.

For the more adventurous, depending on the season, it’s also possible to spot and swim with hammerhead sharks, silky sharks, makos, or blue sharks.

Baja California Travel can organise your stay and boat trips for unforgettable encounters with these magnificent animals in their natural habitat.
